4. National Parks in Greece: Methodology and Results (2)

Land Use by Corine

Using the dynamic map above, it is possible to distinguish the different kinds of land cover in the study area. Specifically the four categories are: wetlands, forest and semi natural areas, agricultural and artificial areas. It is also visible, by clicking on a point of interest, the calculated Area of the particular surface that contains the former point. Simultaneously, the total Area of each category that concerns the whole study area, is displayed.

Geomorphology

For each one of the parks the values of Mean and Range Altitudes have been calculated, as it is displayed in the table below. Due to the lack of data for some points, the calculation of the former values might be considered unrealistic.

Climate Parameters

After the research on the geomorphological characteristics, the presentation of the climate parameters follows. The collected data concerns precipitation and temperature in Greece and specifically the climate conditions in the parks during April and Decememer (1960-1990). It has to be mentioned that the maps belows depict both the climate parameters for the whole Greece and random points within the study area. There is also a table with those selected points and their values after the displayed maps.

As it was expected, temperature values during the winter (December) are lower than those ones during the spring (April). To be more specific, the maximum noticed value in April ranges from 4.9 to 16.3 ⁰C , while in December from -1 to 13.7 ⁰C.

When it comes to the precipation during the two selected months (April and December), someone can conclude that the most rainy month, out of the two, is April, in which the  maximum noticed value of precipitation is 155mm while in December is 123mm.

More spatial analysis

A route was chosen to be depicted in the map below, which is considered  as a representative route crossing the National Park of Pindos, Amvrakikos Wetlands National Park and National Park Lagoons Messolongi-Aitolikou. Departing from Pindos and arriving at Athens, the geomorphology of the terrain varies and this is depicted in the figure showing the profile of the route.
